If this is directed to me....
If you do that it will save you some $$ on your cell phone, however you
will still be paying for termination, so if you do a call back to your
cell there is 1 leg that would get billed then you place a call out
there is another, so you would be paying about $0.03~ per min, as
opposed to paying a cell carrier $0.10~ per minute. Or you can do what
we do, use T-Mobile, get a local unlimited inbound DID and put it in
your MyFavs then use that to dial out. Then you only have to pay for 1
part of the call!
Hope this helps,

Eric,
If you have free incoming calls, usa DISA or callback and have your pbx
call you then give you a dialtone, then dial out from the PBX for your
outgoing calls. It will save you some money on your cell bill :)

Any outgoing calls will come from my cell phone. So it really is just
for incoming. I just want to have a recorded greeting, maybe some
extensions, and unified messaging. Bandwidth and QoS isn't an issue in
the data center, so that's a thumbs up.
I'm going to use an old 1U poweredge 1550 (saves rackspace). I think
it's dual 933's with 512 MB or ram and a small SCSI drive.
Thanks for the input guys!

As I sit here in Boston, front row with Kerry Garrison talking trixbox
in my face all day, I know that he preaches don't ever just rely on
trunk providers. If at all possible, you should always have a line card
as your main connection.
Having said that, my company currently uses ONLY trunk providers, but I
also have a 1.5/3.0 internet connection. So I would say that if you are
going to colo in a DC, you should be fine.
To clarify about the pay as you go. My current configuration is to use
Axvoice only for incoming calls, so I only pay if my phone is ringing.
All of my outbound calls are done thru Voicepulse, which has a least
cost routing feature. I did as recently as yesterday order a PSTN line
for my office, but that will be for outbound faxing only since we can
put men on the moon, but cannot fax reliably with VoIP. I will probably
reinstall our Digium ATA card just to have it as an option.
You set it all up in Outbound Routes link in FreePBX.
What are you going to use this box for?

CAT5 can go directly into the box if you don't want to use POTS lines
(which you are wanting to get away from I'd imagine) NAT is a pain with
any VoIP setup..so if you can put it on a public IP you'd run into less
stress, but you'd have issues with security unless you configure the
server properly. NAT isn't death for the VoIP, but with asterisk/trixbox
you'd have to forward UDP ports 5060-5063 (If you use SIP), 10000-20000
(for the SIP calls..it uses any of those for each call), 69 (for the
phone to download the config from tftp) and 4569 (If you use IAX over
SIP..which from what I hear IAX is more NAT friendly)
It's a balance between security and ease of setup.

I'm going to build an asterisk box and house it in the data center. I'm
going to go with axvoice.com because that's what Judd uses and I like
the pay as you go deal. Obviously I won't have access to any POTS lines
in the DC. My question is, what type of "adapter" do I need to use this
service? Can I plug a CAT5 directly in into this box and get it to work
that way? Also would it be best to put it behind a NAT firewall, or
just use a public IP. I've heard mixed things about asterisk using NAT.
Any help would be appreciated.
